FAQ

Ghostwriting is a professional service where a writer, known as a ghostwriter, is hired to create content that is officially credited to another person. This service is commonly used for books, speeches, articles, and other written materials. The ghostwriter’s role is to capture your voice, style, and ideas of the credited author, ensuring that the final product feels authentic and true to you. In the book world, it is a widely accepted (and used) practice. Over 90% of all celebrity memoirs or autobiographies use a ghostwriter.

Ghostwriting can indeed be an ethical practice (and as mentioned above, a widely used practice) provided certain conditions are met. Transparency between the ghostwriter and the credited author is crucial. The author should acknowledge the contribution of the ghostwriter, even if publicly they are credited as the sole author. Ethical ghostwriting respects the intellectual property of both parties, ensuring the ghostwriter is fairly compensated for their work and the credited author genuinely endorses the content. Essentially, when done with mutual respect and clear agreements, ghostwriting stands as a legitimate and honorable service within the literary and professional writing world.

NO! ONE does not publish books. Our primary service to help you plan, write, and polish your book, but from your very first conversations with our service, we will discuss your publishing goals and concoct a plan for publishing once we have completed writing your book manuscript. Even once we have completed our ghostwriting work, ONE will operate as a publishing consultant (at no additional cost to you) to help you find the best publishing home for your project. In support of these efforts, ONE has professional relationships with multiple, quality book publishers (e.g. Forefront); book designers and formatters; literary agents; and book publicity and marketing experts.

YES! You are the author of the book and have final say on all aspects of the book-writing process. ONE merely provides the words to your book in close creative collaboration with you. Our work isn’t finished until you have approved what we’ve done.

NO! ONE operates as a true ghostwriting service in that we do not require author credit for the books on which we work. However, we very much appreciate some sort of acknowledgement (e.g. a testimonial if you are completely satisfied with our work), especially if it’s something we can use to bolster and elevate the resumes of our ghostwriters. That said, we welcome writing credits or co-author acknowledgements. Still, as mentioned before, these actions are in no way required or expected.

There are a variety of factors when it comes to this question. First, don’t look for a friend in a ghostwriter, at least initially. You want a ghostwriter with experience in your book’s genre who is a careful listener so they can ask thoughtful questions to draw out your book and capture your voice and style. Your ghostwriter should be able to know exactly what you are wanting to do and be able to put it into your words.

We DO NOT work on spec or for free. To ensure a quality product and service, payment is required for all of our projects. In certain situations, we can offer percentage discounts (for instance, if you are willing to offer a co-writing credit); however, we never do any projects without payments. You wouldn’t ask an architect to build your house for free; we look at our work for our clients and authors in the same way.

Because our process requires your feedback and approval during the book-writing phase, this question very much depends on your availability to the project. In general, if you are able to commit 10-15 hours during the planning and outlining phases of the project, and then 1-hour per week for the remainder of the project, our target deadline is 7-11 months (give or take a month or two on either end.) An important part of our planning process is working together to create a project timeline so that all parties involved can have reasonable expectations for the development of your book.

For each of these questions, in certain circumstances, depending on the project, we do. HOWEVER, ONE’s primary service is ghostwriting quality books. In turn, we are a referral partner with some of the best editorial/book coaching/book proposal/book marketing and PR services in the publishing world. If we do not offer the service, we can connect you with a variety of quality options and will make sure you are in excellent hands. Please do not hesitate to inquire if you are unsure if your project is right for ONE.

We do not. ONE has connections with various literary agents and agencies but these are not guarantees for representation. We will discuss your publishing goals, and if this includes trying to secure the representation of a literary agent (which is no small task), this means you want to go the traditional publishing route, which can be a long and arduous process (a great one but difficult). Again, pursuing a literary agent very much relates to your overall goals for the book, which ONE works hard to understand and educate where needed.

We are always looking for talented and motivated ghostwriters to help support our clients and authors. If you are interested in learning more about ghostwriting with ONE looks like, please email info@oneghostwriting.com
